What are the differences between PUR and PIR foam panels?

What are the differences between PUR and PIR foam panels?

05 May 2020

Most of the people only know about PU insulation panels,as the best thermal material in the world so far, only some professional buyers in related industry, they understand there is PUR and PIR. PU is short for polyurethane, and today we will introduce more details about PUR and PIR insulation foam for you. So you can understand them better and know which one will be better for your projects.

☆ The history of PUR and PIR

rigid PU foam panel

No matter it's PIR or PUR,they are both originated from polyurethane, which is a plastic material that invented by German scientist Otto Bayer and his colleagues in 1937. In 1954, rigid polyurethane (PUR) was created, because of the accidental introduction of water.

Then in 1967, scientists improved upon PUR’s thermal stability and flame resistance, and finally create polyisocyanurate (PIR).

This is a development process of the classic polyurethane rigid foam. Today, PUR / PIR is widely used in various fields, such as construction industry(painting, insulation panels, etc).

☆ Comparison between PUR and PIR

Here we can understand some difference between PUR and PIR through the following chart. From this chart,we can find that in the comparison of various performances, PIR is obviously performing relatively well, especially on compressive strength and fire resistance performance.

☆ Advantages of PUR and PIR

Except the comparison,of course PUR and PIR insulation foam has their own advantages, too.

Advantages of PUR:

· Because of PUR’s high water resistance,it can minimize the impact of water damage in wall in flood prone areas.

· As insulation material,PUR foam is able to reach small spaces to create an air-tightness wall for your building.

· PUR insulation foam can be spray onto any type of wall surface.

Advantages of PIR:

· Compared to PUR fire resistant performance,PIR slows the spread of flames and reduces the smoke emitted from the fire, and max can be B1 level fire resistance.

· High compressive strength makes PIR can be used for insulated metal panels, and apply in various buildings, such as commercial buildings, industrial buildings, residential buildings, etc.

· Excellent thermal performance of PIR,it requires only half the thickness of traditional mineral-based insulation products.
