☆ What's oil canning phenomenon？

Oil canning is a visual phenomenon,it's meaning that you can see and feel the perceived waviness of a metal roof panel. And this is an inherent feature of lightweight cold rolled flat metal roof or wall products. Especially in the building,flat areas of a steel roof or wall system. Oil canning can happen with any type of metal material used in construction.

Metal material types are including:

1)GI/ PPGI/ PPGL/ Stainless steel;

2)Aluminum/ Aluminum alloy metal.

Oil canning phenomenon, if it did occur, it’s just a surface issue, and it won't have effects on the structural integrity of the whole panel system. In other words,oil canning  won't cause the roof to fail for that reason alone.
Hereby we will discuss about ways to reduce oil canning situation on metal roofing.

☆ How to minimize oil canning phenomenon？

1,Ask supplier to be careful,during the roll forming and slitting of metal coils and sheets. Apply enough stress to prevent the metal from moving and warping when it tries to recover its previous shape.

2,Please try to buy lighter color.Darker colors and high-gloss finishes tend to show the effects/waviness more than lighter colors and low-gloss finishes,but light color will be better.

3,Please buy a thicker material,because it’s harder for the metal to give in and create the waviness of oil canning.

4,Negotiates with the material supplier and the construction party about the whole process:

☆ Packing & storage : Make sure the metal panels are well packed and protected,and locate the storage area and confirm the condition of packaged or crated materials is dry, protected, supported, and positioned so as to not allow any unusual twisting or stress on the materials.

☆ Panel moving :Request metal panels to be moved in a normal manner, they must being moved in both horizontal and vertical orientation, to the site where they are to be installed. While doing this, please observe metal panels to confirm flatness or if there are signs of oil canning.

☆ Panel installation :Avoid incorrect fastener installation,misalignment of the panels,not installing to the correct dimensions of the wall or metal roofing system.

5,Ask workers to install the metal panels on a leveled, consistent, and in-plane roof deck.

6,Choose roof panels with narrow widths.Because oil canning is most visible in the broad,choosing smaller and narrower panel widths is a common practice.

7,Add tension-leveled metal on metal roofing system.
